Factors Affecting the Ottoman Madrasa System

Abstract

Today, the existence of some internal and external factors in the formation of the education system in general, education-training programs in particular is being expressed. It is not possible to compare the Ottoman madrasa system with today’s education systems and to say that they correspond to each other one on one. However, when assessed within their own conditions, it can be seen that there were many variables/factors in the formation and development of the management and training understandings of the madrasas.

The foremost ones among them are the state authority, the ulama organized as the Ilmiye (cultural) class, the Sunni science tradition existing across the Turkish and Muslim geography, the foundations that provide financing of the madrasas and the mudarris, who was the most important element in the madrasa training. Especially, Sahn-ı Seman, which was built by Mehmet the Conqueror by paying close attention to the management and training system, and Süleymaniye madrasas established by Suleiman the Magnificent well reflect the influence of the state authority on madrasas. The influence of ulama on madrasas manifests itself in preparation and enforcement of the code of laws containing the regulations on madrasas. The scholars from important centers of the Islamic science and culture and the Ottoman scholars, who prefer to these locations especially for high education, have passed the science, culture and training traditions of the madrasas in these regions to the Ottoman madrasas. Again, the works and annotations of the ulama in the leading Sunni line, which was honored by the Ottoman scholars, on this subject were studied in the Ottoman madrasas and had a mentality forming influence. It is seen that the persons, who established the foundations that provided financing of the madrasas, took part in determination of the persons, who would act as mudarris, and the science and works to be taught in the madrasas, in the foundation certificate-charters. The mudarris, on the other hand, was the person, who was totally responsible for the management and training works of the madrasas. In line with their scientific expertise, personal preferences and world perspectives, they could teach different books in their curriculum. In this study, we will try to understand and interpret the foregoing factors, which we think as influencing the madrasa training system, in general.
