This paper discusses the position of Paul Bonatz, who was a jury member- in fact the jury president of the Anıtkabir competition- according to the National Architecture movement which was the main tendency of the time. Firstly, it aims to investigate the National Architecture movement with its important actors, contexts and discourses in order to understand the Anıtkabir building’s large representative index, to be able to read its subtexts and to decipher its codes. It features the nationalism doctrine of Kemalizm as the main key to all issues and tries to deconstruct it. It’s impossible to comprehend Bonatz’s role in the competition, without interpreting his general understanding and tendencies. Consequently, this paper analyzes and positions the Notion of nationalism, the National Architecture movement, the discourse of the competition, the winning Project and Paul Bonatz himself.
