Relationship of Urban Heat Island Effect with Spatial and Temporal Changes: A Systematic Literature Analysis

Abstract

The urban heat island effect is a phenomenon characterised by an increase in temperatures in urban areas relative to rural environments. This phenomenon has significant impacts on environmental quality, human health, and urban sustainability. This systematic literature review aims to analyse studies on the spatial and temporal variations of the urban heat island effect in different cities around the world. In addition to the most recent and highly cited studies on the subject published in 2024, studies were examined by searching different databases, including Science Direct, Taylor & Francis, MDPI, and SpringerLink, until July 2024. A search of research databases was conducted using the keywords 'UHI', 'urban heat island', and 'surface urban heat island', in order to identify studies on spatial and temporal changes. The evaluation was based on the analysis of full texts, citations, and abstracts. In this study, peer-reviewed studies were subjected to analysis, with a view to identifying the principal factors affecting the intensity of the urban heat island. Furthermore, the methodologies employed in urban heat island research are examined, encompassing remote sensing techniques, field measurements, and modelling approaches. The findings underscore the significance of comprehensive urban planning and green infrastructure practices in mitigating urban heat island effects. The table presents the source/reference, aims and objectives, methodology, and finally, the findings of the studies. This comprehensive synthesis of urban heat island research offers valuable insights for urban planners, policy makers, and researchers striving to develop sustainable and resilient urban environments.
