The Use of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants in Education: Instilling a Love of Nature in Children (Preschool Applications)

Öz

This study aims to present a conceptual framework for the use of medicinal and aromatic plants in preschool educational settings and to evaluate their educational potential. Owing to their volatile compounds, medicinal and aromatic plants provide not only visual and tactile stimuli but also olfactory stimulation, thereby offering the potential to support multisensory learning processes. Considering the direct connection between the olfactory system and the limbic system, natural aromatic stimuli may contribute to the development of attention, emotional memory, and environmental awareness in early childhood. In this respect, medicinal and aromatic plants offer a distinctive learning environment that differentiates them from general nature-based practices. Within the context of school gardens or mini plant areas, the study emphasizes the importance of safe plant selection, highlighting the need to prefer non-toxic species with low allergenic potential. It is also suggested that incorporating annual aromatic species that can be grown from seeds may enable children to experience plant life cycles directly and foster a sense of responsibility. To support the transformation of sensory experiences into lasting learning outcomes, observation, description, and drawing activities are recommended. Furthermore, it is underscored that the duration and intensity of exposure to aromatic plants should be carefully considered, and that all activities should be conducted in accordance with established safety principles. In conclusion, the integration of medicinal and aromatic plants into early childhood education may represent a meaningful approach that extends beyond general nature awareness, contributing to multisensory learning, attentional development, and process-based experiential learning.

Eğitimde Tıbbi ve Aromatik Bitkilerin Kullanımı: Çocuklara Doğa Sevgisini Aşılama (Okul Öncesi Dönem Uygulamaları)

Öz

Bu çalışma, tıbbi ve aromatik bitkilerin okul öncesi eğitim ortamlarında kullanımına ilişkin kavramsal bir çerçeve sunmayı ve bu bitkilerin eğitsel potansiyelini değerlendirmeyi amaçlamaktadır. Tıbbi ve aromatik bitkiler, içerdiği uçucu bileşikler sayesinde yalnızca görsel ve dokunsal değil, aynı zamanda koku temelli duyusal uyarım sağlayarak çoklu duyusal öğrenme süreçlerini destekleme potansiyeline sahiptir. Koku duyusunun limbik sistem ile doğrudan bağlantısı dikkate alındığında, doğal aromatik uyaranların erken çocukluk döneminde dikkat, duygusal hafıza ve çevresel farkındalık gelişimine katkı sağlayabileceği düşünülmektedir. Bu yönüyle tıbbi ve aromatik bitkiler, genel doğa temelli uygulamalardan ayrışan özgün bir öğrenme ortamı sunmaktadır. Çalışmada okul bahçesi veya mini bitki alanı uygulamaları kapsamında güvenli bitki seçiminin önemi vurgulanmış; toksik özellik taşımayan ve düşük alerjen potansiyeline sahip türlerin tercih edilmesi gerektiği belirtilmiştir. Ayrıca tohumdan yetiştirilebilen tek yıllık aromatik türlerin sürece dahil edilmesinin, çocukların bitki gelişim döngüsünü deneyimlemelerine ve sorumluluk bilinci geliştirmelerine katkı sağlayabileceği ifade edilmiştir. Duyusal deneyimlerin kalıcı öğrenmeye dönüşmesini desteklemek amacıyla gözlem, betimleme ve resimleme etkinlikleri önerilmiştir. Bununla birlikte aromatik bitkilerin kullanımında maruziyet süresi ve yoğunluğunun dikkate alınması gerektiği, uygulamaların güvenlik ilkeleri çerçevesinde yürütülmesinin önem taşıdığı vurgulanmıştır. Sonuç olarak, tıbbi ve aromatik bitkilerin erken çocukluk eğitimine entegrasyonu, doğa farkındalığının ötesinde çoklu duyusal öğrenme, dikkat gelişimi ve süreç temelli deneyim açısından anlamlı katkılar sunabilecek bir yaklaşım olarak değerlendirilmektedir.
