Are Middle School Students Water Literate? An Examination of Their Perceptions and Levels
Öz
The aim of this study is to examine the water literacy levels of secondary school students in terms of various variables and to reveal their perceptions of water. The sample of the study consisted of 294 students studying in two middle schools located in the city center of Muş during the 2025–2026 academic year. In the study, the Water Literacy Scale developed by Seçkin (2025) and a metaphor form developed by the researchers were used. In this research conducted with a mixed-method approach, the survey model from quantitative research methods and the phenomenology design from qualitative research methods were used together. The quantitative data of the study were analyzed using descriptive and inferential analysis methods, while the qualitative data were analyzed through thematic analysis. The findings of the study revealed no significant relationship between water literacy levels and the variables of gender, grade level, participation in water related activities, and parents’ educational status. However, a significant difference was found in favor of students who spent most of their lives in the city center compared to those who spent it in villages or towns in the sub-dimensions of water behavior and water knowledge, which are among the sub-dimensions of the water literacy scale. In the study, students’ perceptions of water were also identified through metaphors. As a result of the research, students generated a total of 201 metaphors, which were grouped under the themes of vital and biological necessity, natural cycle and ecological system, value and a resource to be protected, health and healing power, and emotional and abstract meaning.
