Gabriel Haritos’ book, “Isreal and the Cyprus Question: Foreign Policy, Diplomacy and International Relations 1946-1960,” is a careful navigation of the diplomatic engagement between Israel and Cyprus during a significant shifting period in the Eastern Mediterranean. By placing Israel's foreign policy within the wider contexts of the dynamics of the post-World War II, the Cold War, and decolonization, Haritos in chapter 1 (pp. 5-22) succinctly traces the circumstances that permitted the shaping of Israel’s interaction with Cyprus through the external political pressures and internal strategic considerations. Cyprus is remembered in history as a territory marked by British colonial rule and Greek aspirations for union with Greece, known as Enosis (Haritos, 2023). The book unveils the different diplomatic moves, especially Israel's contentious position at the United Nations concerning the Cyprus Question, highlighting the interplay of concerns at regional level and politics among superpowers. Generating substantial first hand sources from Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other archives, the author presents a nuanced view on often ignored or less known facet of Israeli foreign relations, resulting to significant contributions to the following fields: history, international relations, and Middle Eastern studies.
