A Viral Pathogen Threatening Vegetable Production: Tomato spotted wilt virus

Öz

The disease caused by Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) has caused heavy crop losses in a wide variety of eld- and greenhouse-grown vegetable around the world in recent years. Currently, TSWV ranks among the top 10 most economically important plant viruses worldwide. The virus is the type member of tospoviruses (genus Tospovirus), plant-infecting genus in the family Bunyaviridae. Virions are 80–120-nm polymorphic particles and virion composition is 5% nucleic acid, 70% protein, 5% carbohydrate and 20% lipid. The continuing economic importance of TSWV is a result of its worldwide distribution and wide host range; the signi cant crop losses resulting from infection; and the dif culty in managing the trips vectors. The present review focuses on morphology, hosts, symptoms, means of movement and dispersal, geographical distribution, economic impact and control of TSWV.
