Jealousy as Trauma in Julian Barnes’s Before She Met Me

Öz

Julian Barnes’s Before She Met Me is built on the theme of pathological jealousy experienced by a history professor, Graham Hendrick, after he falls in love with Ann, a former actress. A sudden sense of retrospective jealousy is triggered in the protagonist upon seeing the roles his new wife had played in the past. As a result, he falls into an obsession related to Ann’s past, and thus, he starts to live a past-oriented life that drives him to become violent towards himself and others. In this sense, Before She Met Me can be read as a narrative in which retrospective jealousy is represented as a traumatic force that triggers a transformation and disruption in the protagonist’s sense of self, altering the way he interacts with himself and others. The pattern of jealousy represented through Graham’s pathological obsession bears similarities to the state of trauma. Thus, Graham’s jealousy can be viewed as a traumatic force that unravels a new perspective of reality of which Graham was unaware, thereby triggering his self-disruption and self-estrangement. However, in its representation of trauma, the novel does not necessarily follow the structure of traditional trauma fiction that is based on an anti-narrative with disrupted temporalities. The study aims to argue how Barnes’s Before She Met Me deviates from the taxonomies of canonical trauma fiction by depicting jealousy as a traumatic force, which causes the protagonist’s self-transformation, self-disruption and the failure of the re-organisation of his self.
