The Career Decision-making Process of Gifted Students at Technical and Vocational High School

Öz

The career decision-making process is critical and complex for typically developing individuals. This process can be even more stressful for gifted individuals who have unique needs and differences. This explorative case study aimed to investigate the career decisions and decision-making process of gifted students attending Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School. Three male students were selected using a criterion sampling method. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews conducted in the fall semester of the 2023-2024 academic year. Thematic analysis was employed to analyze the data; five sub-themes and two themes were produced. The sub-themes of self-appraisals, professional values, and psychosocial factors were categorized under the “individual characteristics” theme, while the sub-themes of education and social factors were categorized under the “contextual factors” theme. The current study revealed a reciprocal and cyclical relationship between individual characteristics and contextual factors in the career decision-making process. This study recommended that career programs implemented in Science and Art Centers (BILSEM) should be expanded to regular schools.
