The Views of Vocational Higher Education Students on Social Media Use

Abstract

Social media became an indispensable part of human life due to the opportunities social media networks offer and differentiated individuals’ preferences in life. The present study aimed to determine the views of the students attending vocational schools of higher education on social media and social media use. In the present study designed with a mixed research paradigm, 70 vocational college students were included in the study group. The study findings demonstrated that most students had social media accounts for more than 4 years, most students accessed social media accounts more than once a day and often for 11-30 minutes, students connected to social media predominantly at home and using mobile devices, mostly accessed Instagram, social media was used mostly to facilitate communications, to follow the daily developments and to get information, and it was determined that according to students, the advantages of social media was to provide rapid access to information and news and connect to individuals who live far away, the disadvantages included waste of time, the risk of dependency, threats from malicious individuals and software, asocial behavior and health problems.
