Purpose: This research aims to address the effects of mathematical games obtained by recycling waste materials on middle school students' environmental awareness and mathematical attitudes. Method: The research using a mixed method was conducted with forty seventh-grade students selected according to criterion sampling in a public school. While the quantitative dimension of the research was formed by a single-group quasi-experimental design, the special case study method was used for the qualitative dimension. Six games created by the researchers from waste materials for teaching mathematical subjects were played with the students (one game each week) in the classroom or the schoolyard. The questionnaires applied to the study group before the games regarding environmental awareness and mathematical attitude were also used after the games. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with six students to obtain more in-depth data at the end of the process. Findings: Qualitative and quantitative findings were presented and integrated. According to quantitative data, it was revealed that the games created using waste materials did not cause a change in the seventh-grade students' attitudes towards mathematics or environmental awareness. Qualitative findings revealed that game applications contribute to learning mathematics, environmental awareness and emotional-social dimensions in different aspects. Highlights: Considering the qualitative findings, it is assessed that incorporating games created with waste materials into mathematics lessons will offer significant opportunities for middle school students, particularly in terms of raising environmental awareness regarding the evaluation of waste materials, fostering an appreciation for mathematics, and contributing to mathematical thinking.
