Purpose: This study aims to examine the geopolitical, economic, and environmental dynamics of the Arctic region, elucidate the contradictions between fossil fuel production and climate change goals in the region, and discuss the impacts of these contradictions on global climate policies.
Design/Methodology: The study employs a literature review method to explore the significance of the Arctic region concerning global warming, energy resources, and international policies. The concept of the Arctic Paradox is evaluated in the context of the relationship between fossil fuel production and climate change. Additionally, temperature changes in the Arctic region and global climate change data are analyzed to compare the effects of regional and global climate changes. Methodologically, this study examines how fossil fuel production in the Arctic affects global warming goals, the impact of temperature changes in the region on both regional and global climate policies, and how the Arctic Paradox creates a contradiction from both environmental and economic perspectives. In this context, the relationship between fossil fuel production in the Arctic and global climate change is analyzed by comparing regional and global climate data, discussing the Arctic region's impact on global climate change.
Findings: Temperature rise in the Arctic region is occurring at a rate faster than the global average, leading to new transportation routes and increased accessibility to energy resources. However, these economic opportunities are causing damage to regional ecosystems and threatening global climate change targets.
Limitations: This study focuses exclusively on the Arctic region, with limited comparisons to climate change and energy policies in other regions. Additionally, due to the dynamic nature of regional political developments, current findings may not fully align with future conditions.
Originality/Value: The study details the contradictions created by the Arctic Paradox from both economic and environmental perspectives and highlights the impacts of these contradictions on global climate policies, filling a significant gap in the existing literature.

Arktik Bölgesinin Jeopolitik-Ekonomik Öneminin Küresel İklim Değişikliği Perspektifinden Değerlendirilmesi

Yıl 2025, Cilt: 17 Sayı: 32, 359 - 377, 30.05.2025
https://doi.org/10.20990/kilisiibfakademik.1621714
