EVOLUATION OF FRANCHISING CONCEPT: SOCIAL FRANCHISING

Abstract

Purpose: Franchising is a popular way of doing business in recent years. Today, it is possible to see franchising through "social" franchising applications, unlike the "commercial" we know. The purpose of this study is to develop a theoretical framework  for  commercial franchising and social franchising concepts and the differences between these concepts.

Method: In this study, literature review method was used; commercial and social franchising concepts were examined in detail and comparisons were made between these concepts.

Results: Social and commercial franchising are basically similar, but there are differences between them. In commercial franchising, commercial concerns are at the forefront while in social franchising, commercial concerns are balanced by social missions and targets. In the context of social franchising, there is a third party, donor, that provides funding for the franchisee, unlike the structure of commercial franchising. Although the words "social" and "franchising" are initially thought of as two contradictory or opposite concepts, the benefit of a social entrepreneur through social franchising is at least as much as the level of commercial franchising and even more.
