Objective: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is one of the leading causes of disability among young people worldwide. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical and demographic characteristics of patients who were followed up with a diagnosis of MS in terms of disability.
Material and Methods: This retrospective study evaluated 195 patients who applied to the MS outpatient clinic between July 9, 2022 and September 9, 2022, using the hospital data system.
Results: There was no difference in the evaluation of Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) in terms of gender (p>0.05). Naturally, EDSS was found to be higher in the progressive group. There was no difference in EDSS in patients with MS in their families compared to sporadic cases (p>0.05). Our study found a correlation between marital status and disability, with a higher EDSS among those who were married. (p>0.05). Higher education level was associated with lower EDSS (p<0.05). The presence of chronic diseases was found to be compatible with an increase in EDSS. In terms of employment, the EDSS of the working group was lower, but the EDSS was higher in the group who wanted to work but could not work and who did not work by choice (p<0.05). Smoking was also found to be a risk factor for developing disability (p<0.05).
Conclusion: Improving patients’ quality of life may be possible by raising awareness in areas such as family, employment, education, smoking, and lifestyle, through the sharing of clinical and demographic data. Social support of MS patients can reduce individual and social burden.
