Assessing the Role of Organizational Culture on Sustainable Business Performance in Family Business: A Research on Family Firms in Uganda

Öz

Family businesses (FBs) long-term survival is a major challenge facing FBs world over. This concern continues to draw debate and academic research from several scholars. Our study aims to broaden research knowledge on Sustainable Business Performance (SBP) in FBs by systematically analyzing the general and specific contribution of Organizational Culture in shaping SBP in FBs. We sought to investigate the role of Organizational Culture (OC) on SBP. Our research used Denison’s four cultural dimensions of Adaptability, Mission, Involvement, and Consistency and measured SBP across four dimensions of social, economic, environmental, and governance. Our study used a quantitative research design and 432 FBs were sampled across different districts of Uganda. Findings suggest a significant impact of OC on SBP. Social SBP was positively driven by mission, adaptability, and involvement. Economic SBP was positively driven by consistency, adaptability, and involvement. Environmental SBP was positively driven by mission and adaptability. Governance SBP was positively driven by mission, consistency, and adaptability. The adaptability culture dimension was identified as the strongest overall driver of performance and profitability. OC enhances SBP through specific strategic roles of organizational leadership, financial performance, learning and innovation, and employee engagement, satisfaction, and commitment. For Ugandan family businesses aiming for SBP, deliberately cultivating specific cultural dimensions- particularly adaptability culture, a clear mission, employee involvement, and operational consistency- can directly and positively influence their social, economic, environmental, and governance outcomes.
