Big Data and Cloud Storage in Education: Educators' Perceptions of Digital Data

Öz

With the advancement and evolution of technology, the use of digital tools has become increasingly widespread. These tools, which are now utilized in almost every field, record massive amounts of data related to individuals’ daily and professional lives. This enormous amount of information, referred to as big data, is used for processing, analysis, management, and predictive purposes across various domains. Similarly, the need for storing these data in technology-based virtual environments has highlighted the importance of cloud storage. Both technologies, which are widely used in different sectors, also make significant contributions to the field of education. Accordingly, this study aims to provide a conceptual explanation of big data and cloud storage, and to explore how educators perceive and use these technologies within educational processes, as well as their opinions regarding their effects on teaching and learning practices. Furthermore, the study seeks to identify the challenges teachers face in relation to these technologies, their level of awareness, and their future expectations. The study group consists of 21 teachers from various branches working in primary and secondary schools in Istanbul during the 2024–2025 academic year. The data were collected through a semi-structured interview form and analyzed using the MAXQDA 24 software. As a result of the analysis, three main themes were identified: “From Cloud to Big Data: Educators’ Interaction with Next-Generation Digital Tools,” “Data-Driven Performance and Risk Identification in Education,” and “Digital Transformation in Education: Current Situation, Planning, and Future Vision.”

Eğitimde Büyük Veri ve Bulut Depolama: Eğitimcilerin Dijital Veri Uygulamalarına Dair Algıları

Öz

Teknolojinin gelişimi ve evrimi ile dijital araçların kullanımı giderek yaygınlaşmaktadır. Hemen hemen her alanda kullanılan bu araçlar ile bireylerin günlük hayatlarından mesleki hayatlarına dair devasa boyuttaki tüm veriler kayıt altına alınmaktadır. Büyük veri (big data) olarak adlandırılan bu verilerin işlenmesi, analiz edilmesi, yönetimi ve veriler aracılığıyla tahminlerde bulunma gibi pek çok alanda yararlanılmaktadır. Aynı şekilde verilerin saklanması teknoloji tabanlı sanal ortamlardaki depolarda tutulması “bulut depolama”nın önemini de arttırmaktadır. Hemen hemen her alanda kullanılan bu iki teknoloji eğitim alanına da önemli katkılar sunmaktadır. Bu amaçla bu çalışmada da büyük veri ve bulut depolama kavramlarının kavramsal açıklaması yapılarak, eğitimcilerin büyük veri ve bulut depolama teknolojilerini eğitim süreçlerinde nasıl algıladıklarını, nasıl kullandıklarını ve bu teknolojilerin öğrenme-öğretme süreçlerine etkilerine dair görüşlerinin yordanması amaçlanmaktadır. Ayrıca bu çalışmada öğretmenlerin bu teknolojilerle ilgili karşılaştıkları zorlukları, farkındalık düzeylerinin ve gelecek beklentilerinin açıklanması hedeflenmektedir. Araştırmanın çalışma grubunu 2024-2025 eğitim-öğretim yılında İstanbul ilindeki ilkokul ve ortaokullarda görev yapmakta olan farklı branşlardaki 21 öğretmen oluşturmaktadır. Araştırmada veriler yarı yapılandırılmış görüşme formu ile elde edilmiştir. Verilerin analizinde ise MAXQDA24 programından yararlanılmıştır. Yapılan analiz sonucunda “Buluttan Büyük Veriye: Eğitimcilerin Yeni Nesil Dijital Araçlarla Etkileşimi”, “ Eğitimde Veriye Dayalı Performans ve Risklerin Tespiti” ve “Eğitimde Dijital Dönüşüm: Mevcut Durum, Planlama ve Gelecek Vizyonu” temaları oluşturulmuştur.
