From Forced Migration to Voluntary Return: Psychosocial Factors Influencing Syrian Refugees’ Decisions to Return to Their Homeland After the War

Öz

This qualitative study explores the psychosocial factors influencing Syrian refugees’ voluntary return decisions. Based on semi-structured interviews with 14 returnees, the data were analyzed using content analysis. Five main themes emerged: perceptions of safety, psychological recovery, sense of belonging, social and familial ties, and adaptation challenges in the host country. The findings indicate that improved security conditions and hope for reconstruction in Syria, together with a strong desire to preserve cultural identity and reunite with family members, play a central role in return decisions. The study concludes that voluntary return is a complex psychosocial process that requires migration policies prioritizing individuals’ psychological and social well-being.
