The Effect of AI-Powered Educational Tools on Curriculum Literacy Competencies and Curriculum Fidelity Levels of Preservice Science Teachers

Öz

This study aimed to investigate the impact of AI-powered educational tools on preservice science teachers’ curriculum literacy competencies and curriculum fidelity levels. This study adopted an explanatory sequential mixed methods design. The quantitative component utilized one group pre-test–post-test experimental design, while the qualitative component was designed as a case study. The sample consisted of 19 preservice science teachers enrolled in a university in Türkiye. Data were gathered using the Curriculum Literacy Scale, Curriculum Fidelity Scale, and a semi-structured interview form. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics and paired samples t-tests, while qualitative data were examined through content analysis. The results of the quantitative analysis demonstrated that AI-powered educational tools significantly enhanced preservice teachers’ curriculum literacy competencies. The qualitative findings, interpreted through the lens of The Diffusion of Innovations Theory (DIT), indicated that participants expressed both positive and negative perceptions of using AI-powered tools in science education. Overall, these findings suggest that integrating AI-powered educational tools into teacher education curricula may be an effective strategy for improving preservice teachers’ curriculum literacy and, potentially, their curriculum fidelity.
