A Sociological Study on Privacy, Religiosity and Social Media Addiction

Abstract

Privacy, which has religious, philosophical, sociological, and psychological aspects, has undergone changes throughout history according to social conditions. However, the invention of the printing press, the discovery of electricity and the computer, and the internet, which were built on this discovery, both strengthened surveillance technology and the emergence of the surveillance society and paved the way for the development of Web 2.0, making it possible to be a voluntary “exhibitionist”, thus initiating the debate on whether the death of privacy has occurred. This is because new media, especially social media, has become the main social space for social presence and is used by almost all internet users. In other words, new media encompasses all layers of social life and offers mediated socialization as an alternative to face-to-face meetings. For this reason, it is important to investigate digitalized life in different dimensions in order to build a healthy social structure. In this framework, this study, which was designed with a quantitative approach and conducted with 319 people over the age of 18 residing in Bursa, aims to measure the effects of religiosity and social media addiction on privacy in general and digital privacy in particular. The findings show that in addition to religiosity and social media addiction, demographic characteristics such as age and gender affect the perception of privacy.
