NIKOLA TESLA MUSEUM AND ITS TURKISH VISITORS
Öz
One of the general objectives of history education is to transmit the past heritage of the humanity in the field of science and technology. On the other hand, one of the most important teaching tools for History is museums and historical places. In Belgrade, Nikola Tesla Museum present us good opportunity for becoming more familiar with Nikola Tesla, and also understanding of scientific and technological competitions at the end of the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th Century. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the Turkish visitors’ statements in the Nikola Tesla Museum Guestbook. Since the 1990s, there has been great increase in the number of the research articles concerning to Museum visitor’s understanding. In this study, document analysis method has been used so that 15 Turkish visitor’s statements dated to 28-31 May 2015 in the Museum Guestbook will be taken into account. Indeed, the popular interest to Mr. Tesla and his life and inventions began in the late 2000s. The articles related to Mr. Tesla in the Turkish periodicals such as Elektrik Mühendisliği, Bilim ve Ütopya, Turkish Neurosurgery ile Bilim ve Teknik caused great importance in the awakening of this interest. Moreover Hollywood adaptation of Christopher Priest’s novel, the film Prestige (2006) has also fostered this interest.The Turkish visitors at Tesla Museum who wrote their statements at the museum guestbook has lack of information about history of electricity and the place of Tesla. They generally used supportive arguments to Mr. Tesla at the Edison-Tesla Competition. In his writing, a visitor criticized him to be American citizen. The Turkish visitor abroad should aware that they represent their country and also they should be attentive in expressing their feelings and opinions in the historical documents such as the Museum Guestbook
