EFFECTIVENESS OF AN IN-SERVICE TRAINING COURSE: TEACHING METHODS AND TECHNIQUES
Abstract
Rapid increase in knowledge production makes societies to invest in
developing teachers’ professional abilities through in-service training activities.
In this study, it aimed to evaluate of effectiveness of an In-Service Training
(INSET) course on Teaching Methods and Techniques. At the beginning of the
INSET a needs assessment carried out and content of the course is determined.
On the basis of this analysis, during the course practical activities carried out
with teachers on expected methods and techniques. Already known teaching
methods were introduced through demonstration method within the INSET
activity. At the end of the course, it is observed that teachers developed their
skills and knowledge on teaching methods which they expected to learn and
participated in better. However no meaningful results were obtained about
development on other teaching methods. Development of teachers can be related
to the analysis of needs assessment made before the course and hands on and
practical learning method applied during the course. In order to increase the
quality of INSET courses, they should be designed in more practical structure.
Therefore, development of practical infrastructure of the courses should be done
through the needs assessment processes before such courses.
