The Mediating Role of Resilience and Self-Esteem in the Relationship Between Peer Bullying and Life Satisfaction

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the mediating role of self-esteem and resilience in the relationship between the levels of exposure to or engagement in peer bullying behaviors and life satisfaction among middle school students. The research sample consists of 1,271 students from the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grades (48.9% male, 51.1% female). Data were collected using the Adolescent Peer Relations Instrument (APRI), the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), the Multidimensional Students’ Life Satisfaction Scale (BMSLSS) – Short Form and the Child and Youth Resilience Measure (CYRM-12). Given that the study data did not follow a normal distribution, the relationships between bullying behaviors, life satisfaction, resilience, and self-esteem were analyzed using the Spearman-Brown rank-order correlation coefficient. The findings revealed a moderate significant relationship between bullying behaviors and both resilience and life satisfaction, while a low but significant relationship was identified with self-esteem. Mediation analyses indicated that self-esteem and resilience play a mediating role in the relationship between peer bullying and life satisfaction, suggesting that these variables contribute positively to life satisfaction.
