Examination of the 2024 Social Studies Curriculum Learning Outcomes from the Perspective of Inclusive Education Principles

Öz

Inclusive education is an approach that builds bridges instead of walls and envisions the inclusion of all individuals in the education system, regardless of their differences. The social studies course, on the other hand, has many common denominators with inclusive education as it is a course that aims to provide the necessary values, skills and attitudes to take part in social life. In this context, the learning outcomes in the Social Studies Curriculum, which was updated in 2024, were examined in terms of inclusive education principles. The aim is to determine how compatible the renewed curriculum is with the principles of inclusive education and in which areas it can be improved. Qualitative research method was used in the study and data were collected through document analysis. The data were analyzed using content analysis method. According to the findings, a total of 30 learning outcomes, 6 in Grade 4, 8 in Grade 5, 7 in Grade 6 and 9 in Grade 7, were associated with inclusive education. These learning outcomes were mostly found in the learning areas of “Living Together”, “Our Living Democracy”, “Technology and Social Sciences” and “Our Home is the World”. In this context, it was determined that the 2024 Social Studies Curriculum is closely related to inclusive education in terms of learning outcomes and learning areas. In the light of these findings, it is recommended that the values, skills, competencies, specific and general purpose dimensions of the program should be examined in terms of inclusive education principles and studies should be carried out to make the program more compatible with these principles.
