The Dramaturgy of Technological Alienation and a Contemporary Directorial Proposal for Gian Carlo Menotti’s The Telephone Opera

This study proposes a contemporary directorial adaptation for Gian Carlo Menotti's opera, The Telephone, wherein the landline telephone is substituted with a smartphone, and the work's critique of technological mediation is redesigned through the lens of current practices. The research question is formulated as whether a new semantic layer can be created by incorporating contemporary phenomena such as phubbing and nomophobia, while preserving the opera's original dramaturgy. The study employs a document analysis method within a qualitative research design; in this context, the opera's libretto, musical score, stage directions, and relevant psycho-social literature were meticulously examined. In the proposed adaptation, Lucy is constructed as a nomophobic phubber, while the character of Ben is framed as a victim of partner-phubbing. The telephone, as implied by the work's subtitle (L'amour à trois), reinforces its function as a third character through the multifaceted interfaces of the smartphone (e.g., notifications, messaging, selfies, social media browsing, app-based fortune-telling). This update recodes the 1940s dialectic of private/public space (the apartment vs. the telephone booth) around a personal, portable, and perpetually accessible device. Within the scope of this proposal, elements such as the interruption of communication, the erosion of self-disclosure processes, and the opera’s ironic/submissive turn culminating in Ben’s video-call marriage proposal are re-evaluated in light of theoretical indicators. The findings suggest that while the comedic nature of the opera is maintained, a critical spectatorial position can be offered to the audience, prompting them to question their own screen rituals. Diverging from existing modern adaptations, this study presents an applicable directorial concept that addresses the problem of technological addiction and offers staging proposals to substantiate this concept.
