This study has aimed to determine conceptions of 6th grade students on some basic astronomical phenomena. 374 primary school students were chosen as sampling. An "Astronomical Conception Test" prepared with the benefit of related literature and consists of nine open-ended questions was used to reveal the ideas of the students on the topic. The methodology used in analysing the data was a categorisation of the responses that are construed as having similar intended meanings. After analysing the data it has been revealed that 6th grade students have different kinds of conceptions on basic astronomical concepts. For the most frequent conceptions revealed by this research it has been suggested that conceptual change activities should be introduced to the instructions at the level of primary education.
