The Relationship between Institutional Quality and Environmental Sustainability: Evidence from Panel Data Analysis

Öz

Living conditions and access to basic human needs vary across the world. Understanding the reasons for this disparity will be possible by identifying the sources of wealth and development. Institutions play a significant role in explaining differences in economic performance. It is necessary to explain how economic performance changes through the incentive-promoting and uncertainty-reducing roles of institutions. The issue of environmental sustainability is attracting global attention, and its solution requires the support of the various economic units it influences. This study, examining the relationship between institutional structure and environmental sustainability, examined the dynamic impact of institutional quality on carbon dioxide emissions using data from the 1995-2020 period for the E-7 countries. The results indicate that economic growth and institutional quality increase carbon dioxide emissions. These results suggest that the E-7 countries are exposed to environmental degradation due to their relatively weak institutional quality and environmental protection regulations. It is suggested that an increase in institutional quality can increase economic activity and attract more trade and investment activity, which in turn can increase carbon dioxide emissions. This finding means that better and higher quality institutions will help increase the level of environmental quality only after a certain threshold value.
