ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine the views of nursing students on gender attitudes shaped by different educational methods and the reflections of these attitudes on patient care plans in professional practice.
Methods: The study was conducted in the form of “descriptive phenomenology” with a phenomenological approach, which is a qualitative research design. The sample consisted of first- and second-year nursing students; 20 students who took the gender studies course and 15 students who did not take this course were included in the study. The research was conducted in June 2022 using focus group interviews based on semi-structured questions. The interviews were recorded with a voice recorder and written transcripts were prepared. The data obtained were analyzed using the content analysis method.
Results: Six themes were identified: the impact of gender inequality on women and men, myths and stereotypes stemming from gender inequality, professional preferences regarding gender differences, representations of women and men in the media, sexist approaches encountered in healthcare, the impact of gender? course on student’s perceptions.
Conclusion: It was determined that the students who took the gender? course given with different educational methods were more aware of gender inequality in the media (advertisements, movies, TV series, news) and health services and showed increased awareness of this issue compared to those who did not take the course. In addition, it was concluded that they reflected the theoretical knowledge they gained through the course in their professional practices and patient care.
