MYTH, ETHICS, AND POWER IN WAGNER'S DER RING DES NIBELUNGEN
Öz
Richard Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen remains one of the most ambitious operatic cycles in Western musical history, as well as one of the most philosophically rich. Drawing on Germanic and Norse mythology, the Ring explores themes of power, desire, love, and fate, presenting a universe in which human ambition and ethical limitations collide. This essay examines the philosophical and mythological dimensions of the Ring, emphasizing Wiener Staatsoper productions, which bring these abstract themes to life on stage. Through close analysis of the four operas, Das Rheingold, Die Walküre, Siegfried, and Götterdämmerung, the study highlights the interplay between mythic narrative, musical leitmotifs, staging, and ethical reflection, contextualized through Schopenhauer’s and Nietzsche’s philosophies. It argues that the Ring Cycle functions not only as a monumental cultural artifact but also as a form of enacted philosophy, demonstrating how performance practices shape audiences’ understanding of power, morality, and human responsibility. By bridging textual, musical, and performative perspectives, this approach contributes to Wagner scholarship and reveals the enduring relevance of the Ring’s ethical and philosophical insights.
