Kazanım Beklentilerinden Kurum Tercihlerine: Sosyal Bilişsel Kariyer Kuramı Perspektifinden Üniversite Tercihinin Anlaşılması

Öz

Üniversite tercihi, öğrencilerin geleceğe ilişkin beklentilerinden bağımsız ele alınamaz. Buna karşın alan yazın, kariyer planlaması ile kurumsal seçimi çoğunlukla birbirinden ayrı süreçler olarak incelemiştir. Bu çalışma, söz konusu boşluğu gidermek amacıyla Sosyal Bilişsel Kariyer Teorisi'ni (SBKT) temel alarak üniversite tercihlerini sonuç beklentilerinin bir yansıması olarak ele almaktadır. Kariyer tercihleri sonuç beklentileri, üniversite özellikleri ise bu beklentilerin gerçekleşmesini kolaylaştıran ya da sınırlayan bağlamsal etkenler olarak kavramsallaştırılmıştır. Araştırma, Ankara'nın merkez ilçelerinde üniversite sınavına hazırlanan 1.367 son sınıf lise öğrencisinden küme örnekleme yöntemiyle yüz yüze ve çevrimiçi anket aracılığıyla toplanan kesitsel verilerle yürütülmüştür. Analizler IBM SPSS 26 programıyla gerçekleştirilmiştir. Bulgular, kariyer tercihlerinin ağırlıklı olarak iyi ekonomik getiri (4,38), kolay iş imkânı (4,22), iş sağlığı ve güvenliği (4,14) ve geleceğin meslekleri arasında yer alma (4,08) gibi sonuç beklentileri tarafından şekillendirildiğini göstermektedir. Üniversite tercihlerinde ise teknolojik olanaklar (4,38), akademik kadro (4,31), temel kampüs olanakları (4,29), şehir ve konum (4,22), kurumsal imaj (4,15) ve üniversite sıralamaları (4,14) belirleyici etkenler olarak öne çıkmaktadır. En yaygın bilgi kaynağı sosyal medyadır (%22); bunu üniversitelerin tanıtım faaliyetleri ve akran ağları izlemektedir (%19). Adayların %38'i üniversite kararını ailesiyle birlikte aldığını belirtmiş olup aile etkisi de süreçte önemli bir yer tutmaktadır. Genel olarak bulgular, öğrencilerin üniversiteleri kurumsal özelliklerinden bağımsız değil, kariyer beklentilerini karşılama kapasiteleri açısından değerlendirdiğini ortaya koymaktadır. Çalışma, kariyer motivasyonları ile kurumsal tercihler arasındaki bu yapısal uyumu bütünleşik bir SBKT çerçevesinde ele alarak yükseköğretim politikası ve öğrenci rehberliği alanlarına hem kuramsal hem de uygulamaya yönelik katkılar sunmaktadır.

From Outcome Expectations to Institutional Preferences: Understanding University Choice From the Perspective of Social Cognitive Career Theory

Öz

University choice is rarely a standalone decision. It is embedded in how students imagine their futures, and yet research has largely treated institutional selection and career planning as parallel processes rather than integrated ones. This study addresses that gap by applying Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) to reframe university preferences as expressions of outcome expectations, offering a theoretically grounded account of how prospective students translate career motivations into institutional choices. The study draws on cross-sectional survey data from 1,367 final-year secondary school students preparing for the national university entrance examination in Türkiye, collected through cluster sampling and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The sample captures students at a critical and time-pressured transition point, giving the findings both analytical depth and real-world relevance. What emerges is a coherent motivational structure underlying university choice. Career-related outcome expectations, particularly income potential, employment access, occupational security, and professional longevity, align systematically with preferred institutional attributes: technological infrastructure, academic quality, campus facilities, geographic location, and reputation. Social media has become the leading information source (22%), while over a third of students report making this decision jointly with their families (38%), a finding that complicates individualistic models of college choice. The finfdings demonstrate that institutional preferences are structurally shaped by how students anticipate their professional futures, not by institutional attributes evaluated in isolation. By mapping this pathway within an SCCT framework, the paper advances a more integrated model of higher education decision-making, with direct implications for university recruitment strategy, career guidance policy, and college choice research.
