Investigation of Podcast Listening Habits

Öz

Internet-based technologies develop new communication models. Podcasts are one of the publishing examples of the digital age, which was born and developed in the digital environment. Podcasts, are a combination of sequential digital audio files available through subscription. Podcasts, emerged in the early 2000s and quickly became a global cultural phenomenon, offer

producers the opportunity to broadcast on the desired subject and the format, and redistribute them according to the requirements of the digital age. Podcasts also provide listeners with the freedom to choose the program they like, the freedom to create their own list, and the ability to listen on mobile.


In this study podcast listening habits are examined. After explaining the concept of podcast and its development processes, the differences of podcast and radio broadcasts are discussed. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with 11 people, including two podcast publishers, who listen to a podcast broadcast every day. In the study, it is aimed to learn the motivation of listening to podcasts with the podcast listeners selected as a study group. The listening habits of the listeners, the features they look for in podcasts and their platform
preferences are examined. Podcasts, which are widely followed in the USA and Europe, progress relatively slowly in Turkey. Participants prefer listening to informative and fun content as long as they are sincere and fluent. In addition, the participants state that they are not annoyed by the advertisements as long as they are at the beginning and at the end without interrupting the broadcast. With the data obtained from the results of this research, suggestions have been made to increase the number of listeners and broadcasters.

Podcast Dinleme Alışkanlıkları Üzerine Bir İnceleme

Öz

Geleneksel yayıncılıktan ilham alan birçok yayın formatı ve aracının dijitalleşmesi ile birlikte yeni yayın modelleri ortaya çıkmaktadır. Dijital ortamda doğan ve gelişme gösteren sayısal çağın yayıncılık örneklerinden biri de podcastlerdir. Abonelik yoluyla edinilebilir, sıralı dijital ses dosyalarının bileşimi olan, 2000’li yılların başında ortaya çıkan ve hızla küresel bir kültürel fenomen haline gelen podcastler yapımcılara istediği konu hakkında ve istediği formatta yayın yapabilme, dijital çağın gerekliliklerine göre yeniden dağıtma imkânı sunmaktadır. Podcastler, dinleyicilere de beğendikleri programı seçme, kendi listesini oluşturma özgürlüğü ve mobil dinleme olanağı ile öznel bir deneyim sağlamaktadır. Podcast dinleme alışkanlıklarının incelendiği bu çalışmada, podcast kavramı ve gelişim süreçleri anlatıldıktan sonra podcast ve radyo yayınlarının farklılıkları ele alınmıştır. Çalışmada her gün bir podcast yayını dinleyen ve aralarında iki podcast  yayıncısının da olduğu 11 kişi ile yarı yapılandırılmış derinlemesine görüşme gerçekleştirilmiştir. Çalışma doğrultusunda çalışma grubu olarak seçilen podcast dinleyicileriyle podcast dinleme motivasyonlarının öğrenilmesi amaçlanmaktadır. Dinleyicilerin podcast dinleme alışkanlıkları, podcastlerde aradıkları özellikler ve platform tercihleri irdelenmektedir. ABD ve Avrupa’da yaygın
olarak takip edilen podcastler, Türkiye’de görece daha yavaş ilerleme göstermektedir. Katılımcılar, podcast içeriklerinin eğlenceli ve bilgilendirici olmasına, samimi bir dille ve akıcı şekilde işlenmesine önem vermektedir. Ayrıca, reklamların yayını bölmeyecek şekilde başta ve sonda kullanılması durumunda dinleyicilerin reklamlardan rahatsız olmadıkları da saptanmıştır. Bu araştırmanın sonuçlarından elde edilen verilerle dinleyici ve yayıncı sayılarının arttırılması için önerilerde bulunulmuştur.
