The Effect Of The Use Of Orff Approach in The Teaching Of Geometrical Objects in 8th Grade Mathematics On The Students’ Academic Achievements

In this study, effect of the use of Orff Approach in the teaching of geometrical
objects in 8th grade mathematics on the students‟ academic achievements was researched.
The study was made in Ankara-Çankaya in 2013- 2014 academic year. An empirical method
with pretest, posttest control group was used in this study. In experimental group and in
control group there were 24 (12 of whom were girls, 12 of whom were boys) students. In
experimental group the lessons were carried out by the instruction method based on Orff
Approach. Achievement test prepared by the researcher was used to obtain data. The
achievement test was applied on the control group and experimental group two times, one of
which as pretest before the application and the other of which as posttest after the application.
Data obtained were analyzed through the Mann-Whitney U Test and Wilcoxon Signed-Rank
Test. In consequence, a reliable difference between the experimental group who received
teaching with the method based on Orff Approach and the control group who received
teaching with the traditional method was found in favor of the control group (p<0.05). It was
observed that the use of Orff Approach in mathematics teaching increased students‟
participation in the class and thus with a more enjoyable lesson it also increased students‟
academic achievements.
