Theoretical Investigation of Gamma-Ray Shielding Properties of Oxide-Compound Reinforced Mo–Ti–Al–Cr–Ta Based High-Entropy Alloys Using WinXCom, EpiXS, Phy-X/PSD, and Py-MLBUF Software

In this study, the shielding properties of Mo–Ti–Al–Cr–Ta based high-entropy alloys (HEA) and composite systems (HEAC1–HEAC4) reinforced with four different oxide compounds (ZrO₂, Al₂O₃, Y₂O₃, and BO) under gamma radiation exposure were theoretically investigated. The mass attenuation coefficient (μ) values of the investigated materials were calculated in the photon energy range of 0.015–15 MeV using WinXCom, EpiXS, Phy-X/PSD, and Py-MLBUF software packages, and a highly acceptable level of agreement was observed among these four calculation tools. Additional radiation shielding parameters, namely linear attenuation coefficient (LAC), half-value layer (HVL), mean free path (MFP), effective atomic number (Zeff), electron density (Nel), as well as energy absorption buildup factor (EABF) and exposure buildup factor (EBF), determined via EpiXS software, were evaluated in detail depending on photon energy and material composition. It was found that at low energies (0.015–0.08 MeV), μρ values were quite high due to the dominance of the photoelectric effect, and unreinforced HEA showed the highest attenuation capacity in this energy region. In oxide-reinforced composites (HEAC1–HEAC4), μρ values were relatively lower; this was attributed to the decrease in the probability of photoelectric interaction. As photon energy increased (0.1–1 MeV), Compton scattering became the dominant interaction mechanism, leading to a significant decrease in μρ, HVL, and MFP values. In the high photon energy region above 1 MeV, the attenuation parameters approached stable levels. Overall, the results demonstrate that Mo–Ti–Al–Cr–Ta based high-entropy alloys and their oxide-reinforced variants can be considered promising options for lead-free, environmentally friendly, and highly efficient nuclear radiation shielding materials due to their high densities (6.55–8.40 g/cm³) and effective gamma attenuation performance over a wide energy range.
