bitig Journal of Faculty of Letters, which is the publication organ of Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University Faculty of Letters, covers basic studies in the fields of Archeology, Art History, English Translation and Interpreting, English Language and Literature, History, Modern Turkish Dialects and Literatures, Philosophy, Psychology, Sociology, Turkish Language and Literature. In these fields and related sub-fields, both conceptual and field research-based studies are included for the dissemination and development of knowledge, especially considering interdisciplinarity. Turkish and English articles are accepted in our journal.
General Principles
Scientific papers submitted to bitig Journal of Faculty of Letters, published by Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University, must not have been previously published in any other medium or submitted for publication elsewhere. The journal operates a double-blind peer review process, whereby the identities of authors and reviewers are kept confidential from one another. The journal accepts original research articles, translations and book reviews from within its scope. No more than one work by the same author(s) will be published in the same issue.
Language and Style
The journal accepts articles in both Turkish and English. The Turkish Language Association’s guidelines shall be followed regarding spelling and punctuation. Submitted articles must meet academic standards in terms of language and style, and should be clear and comprehensible. The editors reserve the right to make corrections to the text regarding language and spelling wherever necessary.
Ethical Guidelines and Similarity Rate
Authors are responsible for ensuring that their manuscripts comply with ethical guidelines. The similarity rate between the work and other scientific publications must not exceed 20%. The editorial board reserves the right to request an ethics committee certificate from authors whenever it is necessary.
Word Limits
Research Articles: Must be between 5,000 and 10,000 words, including the abstract and references.
Book Reviews: Must be between 2,000 and 4,000 words.
Translations, textual editions and works containing excavation reports in the field of Archaeology are exempt from these limits.
Manuscript Template and Formatting Guidelines
Manuscripts submitted to our journal in the fields of social sciences and philology must be prepared in Microsoft Word, using the MLA citation system, in accordance with the template and guidelines presented below. Manuscripts not uploaded to the system in the specified format will not be considered for review.

While submitting an article, the “Declaration on the Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)” form provided by our journal must be completed and uploaded to the system. Click here to download the form.
Each article submitted for publication must be an original work. All authors must have individually contributed to the study and accepted full responsibility for its content. The manuscript must not have been previously published in any printed or electronic format and must not be under review by another journal at the time of submission. The text, images, figures, photographs, and all other content included in the manuscript must not infringe upon the copyright of any individual or institution. Any legal responsibility arising from potential copyright violations lies entirely with the author(s); journal editors cannot be held liable in such cases. The manuscript must not contain any content that constitutes a criminal offense or violates applicable laws, and no illegal methods or materials must have been used during the research process. The study must be prepared in accordance with ethical standards and should not pose any harm when applying the methods or materials used. The author(s) acknowledge and agree to abide by the journal’s principles regarding author responsibilities, ethical guidelines, open access policy, copyright, and publication policy. The author(s) must confirm that they have reviewed and approved the final version of the submitted manuscript. All authors are also responsible for ensuring that their contact information is accurately and completely entered into the DergiPark system.
Manuscripts submitted to our journal are first reviewed by the editor for compliance with the journal's scope and principles. If the manuscript is considered suitable, it is forwarded to the subject editor. The subject editor evaluates the work in terms of language, scientific quality, and journal standards and conveys any necessary revisions to the editor-in-chief. Once these revisions are completed, the peer review process begins. Reviewers have the right to request multiple revisions and re-evaluate the revised manuscript. After the final reviewer assessments and the revised version of the manuscript are submitted to the editor, the subject editor or editor-in-chief decides whether the article will be published or not. Our journal employs a double-blind peer review system.
Our journal upholds the highest standards of scientific publishing ethics and adheres to the recommendations and guidelines established by COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics) for journal editors. Submitted manuscripts undergo a double-blind peer review process, evaluated by an editor and at least two reviewers. Submissions must not have been published on any other platform or be under consideration for publication elsewhere.
(1) The Editorial Board is responsible for each article submission to bitig Journal of Faculty of Letters, and which applies for the whole process – from the submission of the paper until its publication. The Editorial Board adopts the principles of international ethical standard in the frame of COPE- Committee on Publication Ethics.
(2) The Editorial Board examines the article submissions in matters of plagiarism, scientific originality and ethics.
(3) Papers approved by the Editorial Board are sent to at least two referees. Those who receive a positive report from both referees are published. If a positive report and a negative report are received, the paper is sent to a third referee. Thus, the decision is determined according to the report of the third referee.
(4) The Editorial Board keeps the identity information of the referees confidential and ensures that each article is evaluated impartially and within the specified time.
(5) The Editorial Board takes into account the consistent criticisms of the articles published in the journal and gives the right to reply to the authors of the articles that are criticized.
(6) The Editorial Board continuously strives to improve the quality of the journal and its publications.
(7) There is an institutional quota for articles submitted to bitig Journal of Faculty of Letters, a publication of Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University. Accordingly, no more than 20% of the articles in a single issue may be from within the institution.
(8) The Editorial Board maintains effective communication with those involved in the publication process and therefore meets periodically in line with the developmental goals of the journal.
(9) The Editorial Board is responsible for archiving each work.
(1) All referees accepting an invitation to referee are expected to comply with international referee standards. Accordingly, they must adopt the principles of the COPE -Committee on Publication Ethics.
(2) The principle of blind refereeing is applied in bitig Journal of Faculty of Letters. Referees do not directly communicate with authors.
(3) Referees only evaluate the articles related to their field of expertise.
(4) The referees conduct the evaluation within the principles of impartiality and confidentiality.
(5) The referees are obliged to evaluate the articles they accept within the time given to them.
(6) The referees make their evaluations in a constructive manner. The review process must be conducted in a completely objective and impartial manner.
(1) Authors who submit their studies to the journal should provide their full academic titles, name and surname and the institution they work for. They should add the full address, telephone number and e-mail address, as well.
(2) Authors are obliged to submit their original (unpublished) works to bitig Journal of Faculty of Letters and follow the writing instructions given on the journal website. Authors should not submit works that have been previously published or whose peer-review process has begun on another platform. If the authors apply to our journal with a publication they have prepared or presented from their scientific activities and studies, they must declare the relevant information. In case of a contrary situation, the author will be responsible for the situation in accordance with the relevant sanctions.
(3) Authors have the responsibility that the papers submitted to the journal are original and that they are written in accordance with scientific ethical principles. The author's plagiarism report is examined through various programs such as iThenticate, Turnitin or intihal.net. Authors are obliged to upload the reports. If the result of the report is above 20%, the article will not be evaluated.
(4) Authorship should be limited to individuals who have made significant contributions to the study, and all contributors should be listed as co-authors. The corresponding author must ensure that all contributors are included in the author list.
(5) All authors must clearly disclose any potential financial or other conflicts of interest that could influence the results or interpretation of their manuscript. All sources of financial support for the study must be fully declared.
(6) According to the ULAKBİM decision dated February 25, 2020, “For all scientific fields, separate ETHICS COMMITTEE APPROVAL must be obtained for clinical and experimental studies involving humans and animals that require an ethics committee decision. This approval must be stated in the manuscript and documented.” Publications that do not meet this requirement will not be accepted.
(1) Qualitative or quantitative studies where data is collected from participants through methods such as surveys, interviews, focus groups, observation, experiments, and discussions.
(2) Studies where humans and animals (including data or materials) are used for scientific or experimental purposes.
(3) Clinical research involving humans.
(4) Scientific studies conducted on animals.
(5) Retrospective studies assessed under the Personal Data Protection Law.
