Effective Date

The author guidelines provided on this page apply to all new submissions to the Aegean Geographical Journal from 1 January 2027 onwards. Authors are required to prepare their manuscripts in accordance with the guidelines in effect on the date of submission.

The Author Guidelines of the Aegean Geographical Journal that were in effect until 31 December 2026 are provided below as a PDF for archival purposes and to ensure the traceability of previous submission procedures. This document does not apply to new submissions made on or after 1 January 2027.

Author Guidelines

1. General Principles

1. Manuscripts must be prepared in Microsoft Word and submitted in .doc or .docx format.
2. The manuscript text must be prepared in Times New Roman, 12-point font, single-spaced, and in a single-column layout.
3. Microsoft Word's default page margins must be used.
4. Manuscripts must not exceed 25 A4 pages, including figures, tables, maps, photographs, references, and appendices. Whether manuscripts exceeding this limit will be considered for evaluation is at the discretion of the Editorial Office.
5. In-text citations and references must be formatted according to APA 7 (American Psychological Association, 7th edition). For works with three or more authors, only the surname of the first author should be used from the first citation onwards. In Turkish-language articles, “vd.” (Baykal vd., 2023) should be used, whereas in English-language articles “et al.” (Baykal et al., 2023) should be used. Detailed examples are provided on the journal's In-Text Citation and Reference Examples page.
6. The manuscript file submitted for evaluation must not contain any information that could compromise the double-blind peer review process or directly or indirectly reveal the identity of the author(s). Identity information such as “Author”, “Last Modified By”, and similar details in the Microsoft Word file properties must be removed before the file is uploaded to the system.

2. Structure of the Manuscript

Manuscripts must be prepared according to the following structure, depending on the language of publication.

Turkish-language articles:

1. Turkish Title
2. English Title
3. Abstract
4. Keywords
5. Turkish Abstract (Özet)
6. Turkish Keywords (Anahtar Kelimeler)
7. Main Text
8. References
9. Appendices (if any)

English-language articles:

1. English Title

For English-language articles, a Turkish title, abstract, and keywords are not required.

The manuscript file submitted for peer review must not include author names, institutional affiliations, ORCID information, or any other information that could directly or indirectly reveal the identity of the author(s). Author information and other required details must be provided to the Editorial Office through the relevant forms and fields at the time of submission.

3. Declarations and Documents to Be Submitted at the Time of Submission

At the time of manuscript submission, the declarations and documents required according to the nature of the study must be submitted separately through the DergiPark system. These declarations and documents are not part of the anonymized manuscript file sent to reviewers.

6. Ethics Committee Approval Document (where applicable)

For studies that do not require ethics committee approval, the corresponding author must provide, at the time of submission, an explanation of why ethics committee approval is not required.

The Generative Artificial Intelligence Use Declaration is mandatory for all submissions, regardless of whether generative artificial intelligence or AI-assisted tools have been used. Methodological information concerning AI tools used as part of the research method must also be disclosed in the Methods section of the manuscript in accordance with the journal's Generative Artificial Intelligence Policy.

Information contained in these declarations and documents that is required for publication will, upon acceptance of the manuscript, be incorporated by the Editorial Office into the final version to be published. Authors do not need to include this information separately in the anonymized manuscript file submitted for peer review.

Acknowledgements: Any acknowledgement information must be communicated to the Editorial Office at the time of submission. Acknowledgements that could directly or indirectly reveal the identity of the author(s) must not be included in the anonymized manuscript file sent to reviewers. If the manuscript is accepted, this information will be added by the Editorial Office to the final version to be published.

Guidelines on the Structure of the Manuscript

Title

• The title of the manuscript should accurately and clearly reflect the content of the study and should be as concise and comprehensible as possible.
• Abbreviations should not be used in titles unless necessary.
• Turkish-language articles must include both Turkish and English titles, and the two titles must be semantically consistent.
• The Turkish title must be in bold; the initial letters of words in the title, except conjunctions and prepositions, should be capitalized.
• The English title must be in bold italics and formatted according to English title capitalization rules (Title Case).

For English-language articles, an English title alone is sufficient; a Turkish title is not required.

Abstract

• The abstract should concisely and clearly present the aim, method, key findings, and main conclusions of the study.
• The abstract must not exceed 300 words.
• The abstract must not contain citations, figures, tables, or footnotes. Abbreviations should be avoided unless necessary.
• Turkish-language articles must include both a Turkish Özet and an English Abstract. The Özet and Abstract must be consistent in content.
• For English-language articles, an English Abstract alone is sufficient; a Turkish Özet is not required.

Keywords

• Each article must include 3–6 keywords that accurately reflect the subject and scope of the study.
• Keywords should, as far as possible, represent the core concepts and research topic of the study.
• Turkish-language articles must include both Turkish Anahtar Kelimeler and English Keywords, which must be semantically consistent.
• For English-language articles, English Keywords alone are sufficient; Turkish Anahtar Kelimeler are not required.

Main Text

• The main text may be organized into sections such as Introduction, Theoretical Framework/Literature, Data and Methods, Findings, Discussion, and Conclusion, as appropriate to the nature of the study. A different section structure may be used depending on the nature of the study.
• Section and subsection headings should clearly reflect the structure of the text and be internally consistent.
• A maximum of three heading levels should be used in the main text.
• A consistent style should be used for emphasis within the text; unnecessary use of bold, italics, and underlining should be avoided.
• Equations should be appropriately formatted within the text and numbered sequentially where necessary. Equations should be aligned to the left and equation numbers to the right.

Figures, Maps, Photographs, and Other Visual Materials

• All visual elements in the manuscript, including graphs, maps, drawings, diagrams, photographs, and similar materials, must be referred to as “Figure”.
• Figures must be numbered as Figure 1, Figure 2, Figure 3... in the order in which they are first mentioned in the text.
• References to figures in the text must use the form “Figure 1”. For example: “As shown in Figure 1...” or “… is observed (Figure 1).”
• The figure caption must appear below the figure, with a hyphen following the figure number:

• In Turkish-language articles, the English equivalent of the figure caption must be provided in italics immediately below the Turkish caption. In English-language articles, an English figure caption alone is sufficient.
• Figures must be placed at the relevant location in the text. Maps, photographs, drawings, and similar visual materials must also be uploaded individually to the system as separate files in PNG format with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi.
• Graphs must be prepared in an editable format within the Word file so that the Editorial Office can make formatting adjustments when necessary. Graphs must not be inserted solely as images or screenshots.
• Text, symbols, legends, and other annotations used in figures must remain easily readable when the visual is reduced to its publication size.
• Maps must appropriately display scale, north arrow, legend, and other cartographic elements required by the nature of the study.
• The source must be clearly indicated for figures reproduced from other sources or prepared using data from other sources. The author(s) are responsible for obtaining the necessary permissions for the use of copyrighted visual materials.
• AI-generated visuals may not be used as actual research data. The AI-generated nature of visuals used for explanatory or illustrative purposes must be clearly stated in the figure caption, and such uses must comply with the provisions of the journal's Generative Artificial Intelligence Policy.

Tables

• Tables must be prepared in an editable format in Word and placed at the relevant location in the text. Data presented in table format must not be inserted as an image.
• Tables must be numbered as Table 1, Table 2, Table 3... according to their order in the text. References to tables in the text must use the form “Table 1”. For example: “As shown in Table 1...” or “… is observed (Table 1).”
• The table title must appear above the table, with a hyphen following the table number:

• In Turkish-language articles, the English equivalent of the table title must be provided in italics immediately below the Turkish title. In English-language articles, an English table title alone is sufficient.
• The source and any necessary notes relating to the table must be provided below the table.

Numbers, Units, and Abbreviations

• The International System of Units (SI) must be used for units of measurement.
• The language of the article determines the decimal separator. A comma (3,14) must be used in Turkish-language articles, whereas a period (3.14) must be used in English-language articles.
• Abbreviations must be written out in full at first use, followed by the abbreviation in parentheses. Thereafter, the abbreviation alone may be used.

In-text Citations and References

• In-text citations and references must be formatted according to APA 7 (American Psychological Association, 7th edition).
• The author–date system must be used for in-text citations. For example: (Yakar, 2021) or Yakar (2021).
• For works with two authors, the surnames of both authors must be given. For example: (Işık & Erkin, 2021).
• For works with three or more authors, only the surname of the first author should be used from the first citation onwards. In Turkish-language articles, “vd.” should be used; in English-language articles, “et al.” should be used. For example: in a Turkish-language article, (Baykal vd., 2023); in an English-language article, (Baykal et al., 2023).
• Page numbers are not required for paraphrased citations. Page numbers must be provided for direct quotations.
• Authors should consult the original sources they cite whenever possible. When information from an original source is cited through another work without consulting the original source, this must be clearly identified as a secondary citation in accordance with APA 7. A work that has not been directly consulted by the author must not be presented as though it were a directly consulted source.
• All sources cited in the text must appear in the References section, and all sources listed in the References must be cited in the text. For secondary citations, only the source directly consulted by the author should be included in the References.
• The References must be arranged alphabetically by authors' surnames. Where multiple works by the same author are included, APA 7 ordering rules must be applied.
