The Effects of Different Propolis Extracts on Relative Visceral and Gonadal Organ Weights in Adolescent Rats

Abstract

This study aimed to compare the effects of propolis extracts prepared using different extraction solvents and administered at varying doses for 35 days on the relative visceral and gonadal organ weights of adolescent rats. A total of 48 rats (24 females and 24 males) were randomly divided into a control group and three treatment groups: 50 mg/kg ethanolic extract of propolis (50 mg/kg EEP), 100 mg/kg ethanolic extract of propolis (100 mg/kg EEP), and 100 mg/kg propylene glycol-based propolis extract (100 mg/kg PGE). At the end of the experimental period, the animals were euthanised, and the heart, kidneys, uterus, ovaries, and testes were excised and weighed to determine relative organ weights. Analysis showed no significant differences among the groups in the relative weights of the heart, uterus, ovaries, or testes in either sex (p > 0.05). However, female rats treated with 50 mg/kg EEP exhibited a significant increase in relative kidney weight compared with the control group (p = 0.0046), whereas no significant changes were observed in the 100 mg/kg EEP or PGE groups. Since histopathological examination and renal function parameters were not evaluated, the underlying mechanism of this observation remains unclear.
