Potential uses of Ginkgo biloba in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease

Abstract

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by β-amyloid plaque deposition and tau pathology, predominantly affecting older adults. The disease, which begins with symptoms such as forgetfulness, confusion, and difficulty remembering words in the early stages, progresses with more severe symptoms such as the individual's inability to meet their basic needs and not being able to recognize themselves and their loved ones in the middle and advanced stages. Currently, there is no curative treatment for Alzheimer’s disease, and FDA(Since the term “FDA” is not used anywhere else in the text, the full form can be used instead of the abbreviation.)-approved drugs mainly provide symptomatic relief. Ginkgo biloba is a medicinal plant native to China and widely used in traditional medicine. It is reported that the flavonoid and terpenoid compounds in the extract obtained from its leaves have antioxidant properties, reduce clot formation by regulating blood circulation, and provide protective effects on neuronal cells. Ginkgo biloba is thought to have supportive potential as a complementary approach in the management of Alzheimer’s disease. This review aims to outline the general features of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, summarize current treatment approaches, and evaluate the potential role of Ginkgo biloba, with particular emphasis on standardized leaf extracts such as EGb 761 and GBE50, as well as Ginkgo-derived preparations such as Ginexin-F, based on the existing literature.
