Policy - Can editors publish in their own journal?

The practice of journal editors or members of the editorial or advisory board publishing in their own journals is a topic of discussion both among organizations related to journal publishing:

and in the relevant academic literature :

  • Helgesson, G., Radun, I., Radun, J., & Nilsonne, G. (2022). Editors publishing in their own journals: A systematic review of prevalence and a discussion of normative aspects. Learned Publishing, 35(2), 229-240. https://doi.org/10.1002/leap.1449

Since the Journal of Metaverse operates in the specialized field of Metaverse, VR, AR, AI, and related topics, the inclusion of certain papers by editors and board members who conduct significant academic research in this field can be of great importance to the journal. In such cases, a procedure will be followed under the relevant COPE (Section 9) guidelines at https://publicationethics.org/media/234/download?attachment ( https://doi.org/10.24318/cope.2019.1.8 )

COPE Guidelines or Publication Ethics

While you should not be denied the ability to publish in your own journal, you must take extra precautions not to exploit your position or to create an impression of impropriety. Your journal must have a procedure for handling submissions from editors or members of the editorial board that will ensure that the peer review is handled independently of the author/editor. We also recommend that you describe the process in a commentary or similar note once the paper is published, see: ( https://bit.ly/2OGsPk3 ).

Journal of Metaverse Procedure for "Editor as an author in our journal"

  • An editor (Including an Associate, section, or all other editors) who submits an article to an issue cannot act as the editor for their paper.
  • The manuscript will be assigned to another editor from the outset, and other editors will manage the process entirely. The submitting editor cannot interfere at any stage, including the selection of reviewers.
  • Other editorial and advisory board members who submit a manuscript to the journal they serve cannot be involved in any stage of the editorial process related to their submission.
  • To ensure transparency and adherence to ethical standards, a conflict of interest statement will be included on the last page of the published article, explaining how the review process was conducted.
