He was born in 1974 in Bulancak, Giresun - Turkiye. He completed his primary and secondary education in Bulancak. He graduated from Ankara University Faculty of Theology in 1996. After teaching in secondary and high school for two years in Kırıkkale and Ankara, he started working as a research assistant in the History of Philosophy at Gazi University, Faculty of Theology, Department of Philosophy and Religious Sciences in 1998.
He completed his master's degree in 2000 at Ankara University Institute of Social Sciences with his thesis titled John Stuart Mill on Liberty. He completed his doctorate in 2007 at the same institute with his thesis titled Moral Foundations of Liberalism.
He worked as a visiting professor at the University of Edinburgh in 2017-18. He currently teaches philosophy lessons at Ankara University Faculty of Theology, Department of Philosophy and Religious Sciences.
Basdemir's academic fields of study are epistemology, political and moral philosophy, as well as working in the fields of religious freedom, political philosophy and Islamic political thought. He also carries out civil society activities: He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Turkish Philosophy Association and the Turkish Writers Union. He had been a columnist in the Yeni Yüzyıl and Yeni Söz newspapers.
He was the general editor of Liberte Publications between 2014-2020 and the editor of Liberal Thought Journal in 2019. He is currently the editor of Episteme Publications and Philosophy World Journal.
He is married and has three children.
