For Authors

Publication Frequency

The Journal of Turkish Educational Sciences is published electronically three times a year, in April, August, and December.

Publication Language

The publication languages of the Journal of Turkish Educational Sciences are Turkish and English. The peer review process for all manuscripts submitted to the journal is conducted based on the full text in Turkish; therefore, initially, only a Turkish version of the manuscript is required. After the peer review process, for manuscripts accepted for publication, the full English text placed into the journal’s English template and a proofreading certificate are required.

It is essential that manuscripts comply with Turkish and English grammar and writing conventions. In addition to these rules, the use of clear, understandable, concise, and field-appropriate language is expected. Turkish texts should not include foreign words; if necessary, the Turkish equivalent of any foreign term should also be provided.

Every accepted manuscript is reviewed by Turkish and English language editing teams. Accordingly, in addition to the responsibilities mentioned above, authors are expected to make the corrections deemed necessary by these teams before the publication process.

Manuscript Submission

Authors prepare their manuscripts in accordance with the guidelines specified in the author guidelines, as well as the ethical principles and publication policies of the journal. After completing all required supplementary files, authors submit their manuscripts through the journal management system at https://dergipark.org.tr/tr/pub/tebd

Supplementary Files to Be Uploaded

Manuscripts prepared in accordance with the template of the Journal of Turkish Educational Sciences must be uploaded to the system together with the copyright transfer form, similarity report, and, if applicable, the ethics committee approval document. The manuscript templates and copyright transfer form can be accessed via the following links:

Review Process

Submitted manuscripts are directly assigned to an editor, and the preliminary evaluation process begins with the support of the technical team. This stage of the process typically takes 1–3 days.

            Preliminary Evaluation Process

Manuscripts accepted for the preliminary evaluation are first checked by the editors for their suitability within the scope of the journal. Manuscripts that do not fit the journal’s scope are returned to the author(s) with justification. Manuscripts that are within the scope are then subjected to the following three checks to ensure the completeness and appropriateness of the submitted files:

  • If the manuscript requires ethics committee approval, the ethics approval document is examined for compliance. The consistency between the research title and the title on the ethics approval document, as well as the consistency of the author names in the manuscript and on the ethics approval document, and the alignment of the ethics committee date with the data collection period are verified.
  • The copyright transfer form is checked to ensure it is properly completed, that the author(s)’ information is provided in the correct order, and that it is signed with a wet signature by the corresponding author.
  • The submitted manuscript is re-checked for similarity by the journal editorial office using Turnitin, ensuring that the similarity index is below 20% and that any similarities are not indicative of plagiarism.

If any issues are identified in at least one of these processes, the author(s) are contacted and asked to resubmit. Manuscripts that successfully pass all preliminary checks are assigned to the copy and production editor. At this stage, the copy and production editor evaluates the manuscript in terms of quality. Any points requiring revision or reasons for potential rejection are recorded in the manuscript as comments. Manuscripts for which the copy and production editor requests revisions or rejection are then assigned to a field editor, who evaluates the manuscript together with the copy and production editor’s comments. If revisions are requested, the author(s) are contacted, and the submitted corrections are subsequently checked. If rejection is recommended, the manuscript is directly rejected. Manuscripts directly approved by the copy and production editor or approved by the field editor after revision are then checked for conformity with the journal template. Finally, all manuscripts that have passed the template formatting stage enter the formal evaluation process. The completion of this entire preliminary evaluation process typically takes 15–30 days, depending on the responsiveness of the authors.

            Peer Review Process

The assigned field editor appoints two reviewers for the manuscript, selected from different institutions in accordance with the subject area of the study. Invited reviewers are given 7 days to respond to the invitation. If no response is received within this period, a reminder is sent and an additional 7 days are granted. At the end of the 14-day period, reviewers who have not accepted the invitation are removed from the system and a new reviewer is appointed by the field editor.

Reviewers who accept the invitation are given 30 days to complete their evaluations. If the evaluation is not completed within this period, an additional 15 days are granted. For a decision to be made, both reviewers must complete their evaluations. If both reviewers recommend rejection, the manuscript is rejected by the editorial office. If one reviewer recommends acceptance or revision and the other recommends rejection, a third reviewer is appointed, and the decision process proceeds only after the third reviewer completes the evaluation. If the third reviewer also recommends rejection, the manuscript is rejected by the editorial office. In cases of rejection, the reviewer reports are sent to the author(s) together with the stated justifications. In certain cases, when both reviewers recommend major revision or when one reviewer recommends major revision and the other recommends rejection, the field editor conducts an additional evaluation. If the reviewers’ recommendations require substantial restructuring of the manuscript to the extent that it constitutes a major revision, a third reviewer is not appointed and the manuscript is directly rejected by editorial decision. In such cases, all justifications are provided to the author(s).

If at least two reviewers recommend revision, a revision request is sent to the author(s). The author(s) are given 30 days to complete the revisions. This period may be extended when deemed necessary. The author(s) must make the revisions on the anonymized manuscript file uploaded to the system by the editorial office and must document these revisions in the reviewer response form to facilitate the evaluation by the reviewers and the field editor. If, during the first round of peer review, any reviewer indicates that they wish to re-evaluate the manuscript after revisions, the revised manuscript is reassigned to those reviewers for a second round of review. If at least two reviewers recommend acceptance or publication after revisions, the revisions made by the author(s) are checked by the field editor. Upon approval by the field editor, the manuscript is accepted by the editorial office.

Although the duration of the peer review process varies depending on the reviewers’ response to the invitation and the time taken to complete their evaluations, it typically takes approximately 3–6 months. Including the author revision period and all related procedures, the overall process from the initiation of peer review to the notification of the final decision to the author(s) takes approximately 5–8 months.

            Language and Reference Review

For accepted manuscripts, the final English version of the manuscript is first requested. The manuscript is then sent to language editors for review in terms of Turkish and English language compliance and reference accuracy. After completing the language review, a layout editor is assigned to the manuscript, and any required corrections are sent to the author(s). Once the author(s) complete the necessary revisions, the revised manuscript is re-uploaded to the system. The manuscript is then typeset, and the formatted version is sent to the author(s) for final proofreading. After publication approval is received from the author(s), page numbers are assigned, and the manuscript is prepared for issue allocation. This process takes approximately 2 months.

            Publication of the Manuscript

The number of manuscripts to be published in the forthcoming issue is determined by the editors, taking into account the manuscript volume and ensuring balance with previous issues. The manuscripts to be included in the forthcoming issue are also determined by the editors, based on the acceptance dates of the manuscripts and the total number of manuscripts to be published.

            Withdrawal of a Manuscript

While the manuscript is under preliminary evaluation or editorial review, the author(s) may withdraw their manuscript provided that they submit a justification. If the peer review process has begun, been completed, or the manuscript has already been published, author(s) who decide to withdraw their manuscript for any reason are required to submit a formal withdrawal petition stating their justification. This petition must be signed with wet signatures by each author, scanned, and sent to the journal editorial office via e-mail at tebd@gazi.edu.tr. The Editorial Board reviews withdrawal requests promptly and notifies the author(s) of its decision. Since copyright is transferred to the Journal of Turkish Educational Sciences at the time of manuscript submission, author(s) may not submit their manuscript to another journal for evaluation unless the withdrawal request is approved by the Editorial Board.

Artificial Intelligence Statement

The Journal of Turkish Educational Sciences’ approach to the use of artificial intelligence (AI) is aligned with the ethical guidelines published by COPE, WAME (World Association of Medical Editors), and the Council of Higher Education (Ethical Guidelines on the Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence).

AI-based tools may generate outputs that are inaccurate, incomplete, or biased, yet presented in a persuasive and authoritative tone. Therefore, the ultimate responsibility for verifying and ensuring the accuracy of any content generated with AI support lies with the researchers and authors.

Authors, reviewers, and editors/publishers must adhere to the following principles when using artificial intelligence:

• Authors must not list artificial intelligence or AI-assisted technologies as authors or cite them as such.

• Since AI tools may incorporate information from sources without proper citation, including copyrighted materials, it is the responsibility of individuals to provide appropriate references, obtain necessary permissions when required, and ensure that no plagiarism has occurred when using AI-generated content.

• As manuscripts submitted to the journal contain confidential communication and author information, the use of AI tools in the processing or evaluation of manuscripts may violate confidentiality. Editors, reviewers, or publishers must not upload manuscripts to AI systems that cannot guarantee confidentiality without the explicit consent of the authors.

• Editors/publishers, authors, and reviewers must be transparent about the use of AI tools at every stage of the publication process, including manuscript preparation, editing, and review. When AI is used, the user must disclose which tool was used and for what purpose.

Authors who use AI tools are required to comply with the following rules:

• Text Editing: AI may be used to correct grammar or improve the fluency of the text; however, such use must be explicitly stated in the manuscript.

• Method Section: If AI tools are used in data analysis or coding processes, the name of the tool, its version, and its purpose of use must be clearly specified.

• Visual Production: All visuals generated using AI must indicate their source, and the author must confirm that such visuals do not infringe any copyright.

• Literature Review: References suggested by AI tools must be manually verified individually to avoid the risk of fabricated sources (“hallucinations”). For electronically accessed sources, a DOI must be provided when available; otherwise, the access URL must be included.

Example of Transparency Statement

The following statement must be included in the declaration section at the end of the manuscript:

“In the [relevant section] of this study, [Tool Name and Version] was used for [Purpose of Use, e.g., language editing/data visualization]. All outputs were verified by the authors, who assume full responsibility for the content.”
