The study explores
teacher’s perspectives of the reflections of historical TV series and films on
social studies classes. The study was conducted in accordance with the case
study design, one of the qualitative methods research designs. The study group
consists of 10 social studies teachers working in public schools. Participants
were selected according to the maximum variation sampling, one of the
purposeful sampling methods. A semi-structured
interview form was used as the data collection tool and the qualitative data
were analyzed using Nvivo 10. The participants thought that historical TV series and films not only
help boost the level of cognitive readiness but also aid learners commit what
they learn into their memory. In addition, it also promote learners’ skills
related with perception of time and chronology. On the other hand, the
participants also noted that some these TV series and films lead to incorrect
learning of some historical facts and cause students to misinterpret some
historical events. Moreover, some of the content of such films, particularly
violence and profanity function as a bad model for younger generations.
Bu çalışmada öğretmen görüşleri doğrultusunda
tarihi dizi ve filmlerin sosyal bilgiler dersine yansımalarının neler olduğunu
belirlemek amaç edinilmiştir. Çalışma
nitel araştırma desenlerinden durum çalışmasına uygun olarak yürütülmüştür.
Çalışma grubu devlet okullarında görev yapan 10 sosyal bilgiler öğretmeninden
oluşmaktadır. Katılımcılar amaçlı örnekleme yöntemlerinden maksimum çeşitlilik
örnekleme yöntemine göre belirlenmiştir. Araştırmada veri toplama aracı olarak yarı
yapılandırılmış görüşme formu kullanılmış ve elde edilen veriler NVivo 10.
programı kullanılarak analiz edilmiştir. Katılımcılara göre tarihi dizi ve
filimler sosyal bilgiler dersinde öğrencilerin bilişsel hazırbulunuşluluk
düzeyini artırmakta, derste öğrenilen bilgilerin öğrencilerin zihinlerinde
somutlaşmasına ve zaman ve kronolojiyi algılama becerilerinin gelişmesine katkı
sunmaktadır. Ancak katılımcılara göre bazı tarihi dizi ve filimler,
öğrencilerin bazı tarihi bilgileri hatalı öğrenmesine ve yanlış tarih algısının
oluşması neden olmaktadır. Ayrıca katılımcılara göre bazı dizi ve filmlerde yer
alan müstehcen veya şiddet içerikli sahneler öğrencilere kötü örnek teşkil
etmektedir.

In accordance with the ULAKBİM decision of 25 February 2020, Ethics Committee Approval must be obtained for studies on people (without age restrictions), this approval must be specified in the Method section of the article and signed Ethics Committee Approval must be uploaded to the system. Applications that do not meet these requirements will not be considered for publication.
4- New Publication Policy
Beginning from Spring 2021 issue TUHED will require all Turkish manuscripts to contain a full-text English translation. Manuscripts submitted in Turkish will be requested to have full-text English translation if they are accepted for publication after the review process.
