Abstract

Investigation of the statistics used in the articles published in veterinary sciences

Year 2022, Volume: 93 Issue: 1, 9 - 17, 15.01.2022

Abstract

This research was carried out to determine statistical errors in articles published in Veterinary Sciences and to investigate whether this situation changes according to departments in Veterinary Faculties. As the material; 1018 research articles published in one journal selected from the journals included in the SCI-E (Science Citation Index- Expanded) index and not included in the SCI-E index were examined. First of all, in 562 articles published in Veterinary Sciences, 531 (94.48%) used statistics and 31 (5.52%) not used statistics were detected. Among the articles determined to use statistics, a total of 125 articles, 77 from the journal included in the SCI-E index and 48 from the journal not included in the SCI-E index, were selected to evaluate statistical errors. In veterinary sciences; 25 articles selected for each section, namely Food Hygiene and Technology, Clinical Sciences, Pre-clinical Sciences, Basic Sciences, Animal Science and Animal Nutrition, were evaluated in detail according to the determined criteria. Among the total number of articles (125), it was determined that the most common statistical errors were "errors in the presentation of the results with tables or graphics". It was determined that there was no difference between indexed and non-indexed journals in terms of a total of 340 statistical errors determined according to the identified criteria (p>0.05) and the use of statistics in the articles was high. As a result; It is thought that it would be beneficial for researchers to have basic statistical knowledge and to get help from a biostatistics expert when necessary. Also, it was concluded that it would be appropriate to include a biostatistician in the journals or to send the articles sent to the journals to a biostatistics expert during the review process.
