The Meeting of Water and Art in the Tulip Era: Stone Decorations in the Fountains of Nevşehir Damat İbrahim Pasha Complex
Öz
During the Tulip Era, Ahmed III (1673-1736) reigned on the Ottoman throne, while Nevşehirli Damat İbrahim Pasha served as Grand Vizier. The Tulip Era was a period marked by the search for new styles, renewal and the peak of aesthetic sensibilities. During this period, water structures were particularly constructed; these structures contributed significantly to Ottoman architecture through both their functional and artistic values. In Ottoman architecture, the Tulip Era was a period in which cultural and artistic interaction between the capital and the provinces became more pronounced. During this period, it is evident that high-ranking state officials concentrated their urban development activities in the cities where they were born or to which they felt a sense of belonging. The Grand Vizier of the era, Nevşehirli Damat İbrahim Pasha, also drew attention in this regard not only for his contributions in Istanbul but also for the charitable works he established in his hometown of Nevşehir and its surroundings. This difference is directly related to the structures’ locations and intensity of use. This study aims to analyze how water architecture and stonework intertwined during the Tulip Era, specifically focusing on Nevşehir. The botanical and geometric motifs in the examined fountain examples symbolize the life-giving role of water and the importance of aesthetic values in Ottoman society. By highlighting the contributions of the fountains in the Damat İbrahim Pasha Complex to Ottoman water architecture and decorative arts, this study offers a new perspective on the cultural and artistic heritage of the Tulip Era.
