Determination of Mineral Content and Quality of Barley Varieties

Abstract: Barley grain has a very important place in human and animal nutrition since it is rich in mineral content among cereals. The study was conducted with 24 barley genotypes in irrigated and rainfed conditions during 2020-2021 growing season at the central location of Konya, with 2 replications. It was aimed to determine the effect of different conditions on the examined quality traits. In addition to the physical quality characteristics of thousand kernel weight, hectoliter weight, sieve analysis, some feed quality traits (crude protein content, ADF, NDF, cellulose, beta glucan) and some mineral contents (K, P, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu were determined. It has been determined that the quality traits of the varieties and their mineral contents are significantly affected by growing conditions. K, P, Ca, Mg, Na, B, Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu contents of the varieties in both conditions, were determined as 4169.6, 3334.3, 605.0, 1219.1, 547.8, 5.45, 42.22, 19.07, 24.16, 6.64 mg kg-1 respectively. The average beta-glucan, ADF and NDF values of the examined varieties varied between 4.10-5.52%, 5.43-7.55% and 20.60-27.85%, respectively. This study, in agreement with previous research, indicates that varietal characteristics and growing conditions are the primary factors influencing the mineral content of barley.
