Determination of Pre-Service Science Teachers’ Levels of Competence for 21st Century Skills

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to determine 21st century skills of pre-service science teachers and to compare their 21st Century Skills according to their gender, grade level and university. For this purpose, cross-sectional survey was used to collect data from eight public universities in the Aegean region. Sample of the research consisted of a total of 799 science pre-service science teachers studying in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade in 2019-2020 academic year. In order to collect data, 21st century skills scale was developed by collecting sub-scales of 21st century skills from scale development and adaptation studies in the literature. As a result of the research, female pre-service science teachers were statistically significantly higher score than male participants in communication sub-scale of 21st century skills. However, male participants were statistically significantly higher score than male participants in cooperation sub-scale of 21st century skills. Also, mean scores of participants in communication and creativity skills differed significantly according to grade level. The mean scores of participants in communication and cooperation skills differed significantly according to their university. In the light of these findings, information can be provided about the situation of participants considering 21st century skills in general, and studies can be carried out in order to gain and develop 21st century skills to participants.
