Structural System Classifications in Architectural Design: A Comparative Review

Öz

This study aims to examine existing classification methods of structural systems in the literature within a comparative framework, based on their theoretical and methodological approaches. The scope of the research includes different system classifications developed by theorists accepted in the fields of building knowledge, architectural technology, and the historical evolution of these approaches. As a method, the selected classification models are subjected to a comparative analysis based on defined parameters, including load transfer principles, form-geometry interaction, material properties, and construction logic. The main importance of the study lies in repositioning structure not merely as an engineering-focused technical data set, but as an architectural design and expression element. Because the existing literature largely focuses on technical data, this study's unique contribution is its systematic synthesis and comparison of the theoretical foundations and methodological differences underlying classification approaches through an original comparative analytical matrix. The comparative analysis yields three concrete findings: First, it reveals a historical paradigm shift from defining structure as a passive mechanical support to an active space-generating boundary. Second, it demonstrates that geometric characteristics serve as the most effective bridging parameters between engineering rationality and architectural design. Third, it addresses the fragmented nature of existing terminology by offering a synthesized taxonomy. This study aims to contribute to both the academic literature and architectural design education by establishing a theoretical and systematic framework for integrating structure and space in the design process, thereby offering a unique perspective.
