THE METACOGNITIVE AWARENESSES OF PRESERVICE SECONDARY SCHOOL MATHEMATICS TEACHERS, BELIEFS, ATTITUDES ON PROBLEM SOLVING, AND RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THEM
Öz
In this research, the metacognitive awarenesses, the levels of beliefs-attitudes of secondary school pre-service mathematics teachers towards mathematical problem solving, the changes of these levels according to the class variable and the relationships between them were investigated. The research, which was designed with the correlational research method, consisted of 265 pre-service teachers as the participants. Data were collected with three different tools as “The Metacognitive Awareness Inventory”, “The Belief Scale Related to Mathematical Problem Solving”, “The Mathematical Problem Solving Attitude Scale” The gathered data were analysed applying descriptive statistics, The one-way multivariate analysis of variance (one-way
MANOVA) and multivariate regression analysis. As a result of the analyses, it was determined that metacognitive awarenesses of pre-service secondary school mathematics teachers, their beliefs and attitudes towards mathematical problem solving were high in general. It was not encountered with the ones with low levels of metacognitive awarenesses, beliefs or attitudes. The metacognitive awarenesses, beliefs and attitudes according to the class variable are not significantly different. Moreover, there is a close and positive relationship between the metacognitive awareness and attitude or belief towards the problem solving. Also, It was determined that the effects of pre-service teachers’ beliefs and attitudes on their metacognitive awarenesses was 8%.
