Toplumsal Cinsiyet Merceğinden Bridgerton’a Bakış

Feminist translation studies, which lies at the intersection between translation studies and gender studies, has begun to include the study of audiovisual translation as well as literary translation as a field of research since the early 2000’s. One reason may be the rise of streaming platforms, increasing the need for audiovisual translation like subtitling. Given the broad reach and influence of streaming platforms, analyzing the portrayal of gender issues in translated content is crucial. In this study, the subtitles of Netflix’s historical drama Bridgerton, based on the novels by Julia Quinn, will be analyzed with the feminist translation strategies adapted by Wallmach (2006). To examine how the series translator conveys gender-related expressions in subtitles, the frequency of the relevant translation strategies will be assessed using quantitative analysis. Additionally, this analysis aims to demonstrate that the same translation strategies may be perceived as feminist or sexist depending on the context. Furthermore, it investigates whether historical romantic dramas depict past gender issues faithfully or through an activist lens, by analyzing the translator’s role in this representation.
