From Travel Knowledge to Tourism Imaginaries: A Historical-Conceptual Review of Early Travel
Öz
This article examines how early travelers contributed to the long historical formation of modern tourism by producing geographical knowledge, circulating travel narratives, and giving symbolic form to routes, regions, and cultural encounters. It treats tourism as a historically layered field of mobility without projecting the institutions of modern tourism into antiquity or the Middle Ages. Using a historical-conceptual integrative review of English- and Turkish-language scholarship, critical editions, and historical syntheses, the study analyzes four historical formations and the nineteenth-century transition from the Grand Tour to railways and organized tours. The synthesis shows that travel practices created knowledge infrastructures, narrative conventions, and spatial imaginaries later reworked in heritage, cultural-route, pilgrimage, educational, maritime, and ecological tourism. By linking historical geography, mobilities theory, tourism history, and tourism imaginaries, the article explains how travel-generated knowledge became part of tourism's symbolic infrastructure and identifies historically responsible applications for route interpretation and heritage mediation.
