An Examination of the Differences Between Ugliness Between the Genders in the Art of William Hogarth

This article aims to study the series of moral works depicting moral corruption of its era, by William Hogarth, who is mainly known for his paintings and engravings. The study aims to indicate the beauty and ugliness codes of the time and specifically of the artist by examining his artworks and his theoretical studies on the subject. Two series of works depicting the moral corruption of people as result of wrong decision will be examined in light of the obtained data. The importance of these series to the study is that the characters belong to different genders. The characters, namely, Molly and Tom have slightly different stories under similar themes. This study will research whether the artist made different choices when making the characters morally and physically ugly. The article specifically aims to observe if the said deviation in beauty codes is dependent on the gender of the character that is depicted to be morally corrupt.

William Hogarth’ın Sanatında Çirkinlik Kodlarının Cinsiyet Farkları Üzerinden Bir Okuması

Öz

Bu makalede, özellikle gravür çalışmaları ile tanınan İngiliz Ressam William Hogarth’ın dönemin gözünden ahlaki çirkinliği ele aldığı didaktik çalışmaları irdelenecektir. Çalışma sanatçının teorik eserlerini ve sanat üretimini inceleyerek dönemin ve kendisinin güzellik ve çirkinlik kodlarını saptamayı hedefler. Elde edilen veriler sonucunda sanatçının, insanın verdiği yanlış kararlar sonucu ahlaki bozulmaya sürüklenmesini anlatan iki seri çalışması incelenecektir. Serilerin çalışma için en büyük önemi karakterlerden birinin erkek birinin ise kadın olmasıdır. İsimleri Molly ve Tom olan bu karakterlerin hikayeleri farklı olsa da çalışmaların temaları aynıdır. Bu çalışmalar dahilinde karakterlerin ahlaki ve fiziksel çirkinleşmelerinde sanatçının farklı seçimler yapıp yapmadığı irdelenecektir. Makale bu ahlaki çirkinliğin yansıtılmasında güzellik kodlarından olan sapmanın ele alınan karakterlerin cinsiyeti açısından değişiklik gösterip göstermediğini ortaya çıkarmayı hedefler.
