Examining the Spatial Impacts of Globalization on Commercial Functions: The Case of Marseille Coastline

Öz

This study aims to examine the spatial, economic, socio-cultural, and digital impacts of globalization on commercial functions along the Marseille coastline. Designed as a qualitative case study, the research employs literature review, secondary data analysis, and visual/spatial investigation. The transformation process is evaluated through the Euroméditerranée Project and selected waterfront focal areas, including Vieux-Port, Les Halles de la Major, Les Terrasses du Port, and the MUCEM area. The findings indicate that traditional port and local commercial functions have gradually been replaced by tourism-, service-, culture-, and consumption-oriented spatial uses. While this restructuring has increased economic vitality and global visibility, it has also generated socio-cultural tensions such as gentrification, selective publicness, weakening cultural continuity, and pressure on local tradesmen. In addition, digitalization and omnichannel retail practices have transformed user experience while also creating new risks of digital inequality for local businesses. The study concludes that commercial transformation in waterfront areas should be addressed not merely as a physical and economic process, but as a multilayered transformation that requires inclusive and balanced urban policies.
